Rescuing wildlife often reveals stories of resilience and hope. Recently, three Muscovy ducks arrived at For The Birds of Acadiana, each with a unique and challenging history. Their journey from severe injuries to full recovery and release highlights the power of dedicated care and the importance of a supportive environment. This story shares their individual struggles, the treatment they received, and their eventual return to freedom on a peaceful rural property.

The Unique Circumstances of Each Rescue
Each duck came to the center under different, difficult conditions that required immediate and specialized attention.

Two Ducks Struck by Vehicles
Two of the ducks suffered injuries from vehicle collisions, a common but serious threat to wildlife near roads.
Duck One arrived with significant head trauma. The impact caused swelling and disorientation, making it difficult for the duck to maintain balance or respond normally.
Duck Two showed signs of probable spinal bruising. This injury left the duck unable to stand or walk, a critical concern for its survival and mobility.

The Third Duck’s Ordeal
The third duck endured a different kind of trauma. It was attacked by a domestic dog and suffered puncture wounds. Worse, it was trapped inside a broken-down truck for over 10 hours before being helped. This prolonged confinement added stress and risk of infection to its injuries.
The combination of physical wounds and the conditions of being trapped made this duck’s recovery particularly challenging.
The Rehabilitation Process Over Three Weeks
The rehabilitation team designed a tailored care plan for each duck, focusing on healing, nutrition, and gradual physical therapy.
Immediate Care and Medical Treatment
Head trauma treatment involved anti-inflammatory medication and careful monitoring to reduce swelling and prevent complications.
Injury care included pain management and supportive measures to encourage mobility without causing further harm.
Wound care for the dog attack victim required cleaning, antibiotics to prevent infection, and close observation for signs of healing.
Supportive Environment
The ducks were housed in quiet, safe enclosures. This environment reduced stress which is essential for recovery.
Physical Therapy and Mobility Support
For the duck with spinal bruising, we introduced gentle exercises to stimulate muscle strength and coordination. Over time, this duck progressed from being unable to stand to walking short distances.
The duck with head trauma gradually regained balance and alertness, showing steady improvement each day.
Nutrition and Hydration
All three ducks received a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support tissue repair and overall health. Hydration was carefully maintained, especially for the duck recovering from prolonged confinement.
The Importance of Being Together
Throughout their recovery, the ducks stayed together. This companionship proved vital for their emotional well-being and motivation.
Muscovy Ducks are social animals, and isolation can cause stress that slows healing.
Being together allowed them to engage in natural social behaviors, which helped reduce anxiety.
Their bond strengthened as they healed, preparing them for life back in the wild.
Successful Release on Private Rural Property
After three weeks of dedicated care, the ducks were ready to return to the wild. They were released on a private rural property chosen for its safe, natural environment and ample water sources.
This location offered:
A peaceful setting away from busy roads and urban threats.
Access to a ponds and a natural bayou with open spaces suitable for Muscovy ducks.
A chance for the ducks to remain together, maintaining their social bonds.
The release was a moment of joy, marking the end of a difficult chapter and the beginning of a second chance.

Federal Protection Status of Muscovy Ducks
The Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) is a unique species that is not native to the United States but has established populations in various regions. When discussing its federal protection status, it is important to note the following points:
Not Protected Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act: Unlike many other waterfowl species, Muscovy ducks are not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) in the United States. This means that there are no federal restrictions on hunting or managing these ducks.
State Regulations May Apply: While there is no federal protection, individual states may have their own regulations regarding the hunting or management of Muscovy ducks. It is important for hunters and landowners to check local laws.
Invasive Species Considerations: In some areas, Muscovy ducks are considered an invasive species due to their impact on local ecosystems. As such, certain states may encourage control measures to manage their populations.
Overall, while Muscovy ducks do not have federal protection, their status can vary by state, and local regulations should always be consulted for specific guidance.
